Highlights from the Interview

Audrey: Welcome to Women Just Like You! Let's start with a fun question. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Deanne: I always dreamed of being a pilot. The thought of soaring high above the clouds captivated my imagination. I was drawn to the freedom of exploring new horizons and experiencing the world from a unique vantage point. It symbolized adventure and the limitless possibilities of life.

Audrey: It's great to dream big. You've had a global life, moving from India to Nigeria, then to the United States. How has this impacted your career aspirations?

Deanne: Living in various countries exposed me to diverse cultures and perspectives, which has deeply influenced my professional and personal outlook. It instilled in me a flexibility and adaptability that are crucial in today’s global business environment. These experiences taught me the importance of understanding and integrating different cultural viewpoints, which is vital in any global or cross-cultural role I take on.

Audrey: Let’s discuss your career in revenue operations. Can you describe what you do?

Deanne: In revenue operations, I act as a bridge between the sales and IT departments, ensuring that both sides can effectively communicate their needs and challenges. My role involves overseeing the systems that support our sales processes, primarily through customizing Salesforce to meet our specific business requirements. This means managing projects that enhance the efficiency of everything from lead management to closing deals, ensuring a smooth flow of data and processes.

Audrey: What differences have you noticed working in the US compared to India?

Deanne: The work culture in the US and India are quite different. In India, for example, the number of public holidays and the general approach to work-life balance are quite distinct. The professional language and formalities also vary, which required some adjustment when I started working in the US. Understanding and adapting to these differences was crucial for my professional integration and effectiveness.

Audrey: Transitioning to your current role, how did you bridge your background in marketing to specializing in IT and revenue operations?
Deanne: My transition was driven by my fascination with the technological tools I was using in marketing. I was intrigued by the potential of these tools to transform business operations. My curiosity led me to delve deeper into the technical aspects, which eventually guided me to a career in revenue operations where I could apply both my business acumen and my technical skills to optimize our operational efficiencies.

Audrey: Could you share your experiences with certifications and how they’ve influenced your career?

Deanne: Obtaining a Salesforce certification was initially challenging. The process was rigorous and failing the first exam was disheartening. However, I didn’t give up. I joined a supportive community through a bootcamp, which was instrumental in my learning and eventual success. This certification not only boosted my technical skills but also my confidence in navigating complex IT environments. It’s a testament to the importance of perseverance and the value of community support in professional growth.

Audrey: For women considering a similar career path, what advice would you give?

Deanne: Seek out communities and networks that align with your career interests. Surround yourself with people who are also looking to grow and change; their support and understanding can be invaluable. Also, don't shy away from technical roles. Women can excel in these areas by leveraging their unique skills in communication and problem-solving.

Audrey: As you continue to grow in your career, how do you balance professional demands with personal interests?

Deanne: It’s essential to set clear boundaries and priorities. While I am committed to my career, I also make time for personal passions such as art, which helps me maintain my mental health and creativity. Finding a balance that allows you to thrive both in and out of work is key to long-term success and fulfillment.

Audrey: Any final thoughts or advice for women in the middle of their careers?

Deanne: Always advocate for yourself in the workplace. Know your worth and don’t hesitate to voice your achievements and career needs. Persistence in pursuing what you deserve can significantly influence your professional trajectory and personal satisfaction.
